How to Hang a Macramé Plant Hanger | Sambrini Studio

“But where would I hang it?”

It's one of the most common questions I hear! The good news? There are so many ways to hang a macrame plant hanger - whether you’re handy with a drill or prefer a no-tools approach. From classic ceiling hooks to creative up-cycling solutions, you don’t need to be a DIY expert to find a spot for one in your home.

In this blog, you'll find some of my favourite ways to display a macrame plant hanger...

The Classic Options

Ceiling Hooks

The most traditional method - and still one of the best. Screw a hook directly into the ceiling and you’re good to go. This works brilliantly if you want your plant to hang freely in the middle of a room or near a window. Just work out whether you’re drilling into something solid (like a joist) or plasterboard on its own - this will determine what type of hook you’ll need and whether an anchor plug is appropriate.

✨ Best for: Heavier pots and dramatic displays.

🛠️ DIY level: Drill required.

Beams

If you’re lucky enough to have exposed beams, macramé plant hangers look amazing hanging from them. With some hangers, you can simply loop the cord over and tie it securely - no tools required. For others, add a hook or nail and you’re good to go.

✨ Best for: Rustic, farmhouse, or character homes.

🛠️ DIY level: No drill.

Curtain Poles

For lighter plants and pots, try slipping a macramé hanger onto a curtain pole, or use an S-hook. It’s such an easy way to bring greenery right up to your windows, and it makes use of something you already have in place.

Best for: Small plants that love plenty of light in windows where you don’t draw the curtains

🛠️ DIY level: No dril

Creative Ways to Hang Macrame Plant Hanger’s

Wall Brackets

Wall brackets give you a similar effect to a ceiling hook, but they’re fixed to the wall instead. They’re great if your ceiling isn’t strong enough, or if you want to create a “plant corner” or feature wall. You can find simple colourful brackets or more natural looking wooden ones to suit your style and match your space.

Best for: Small spaces or creating a plant “gallery wall”

🛠️ DIY level: Drill required

Floating Ladder

One of my favourite creative ideas - I’ve seen people mount an old ladder horizontally to the ceiling (like a pan rack). You can then hang several macramé plant hangers from the rungs. It’s quirky, fun, and a brilliant way to upcycle something that might otherwise end up at the tip.

✨ Best for: Large open-plan spaces or plant lovers who want a statement feature

🛠️ DIY level: Drill + mounting hardware required

⚠️ Note: Be mindful of your fixtures and the total weight - you don’t want the ladder breaking or anything falling from above!

Free Standing Plant Hanger Stand

If you don’t want to drill at all, freestanding clothes rails or coat stands are a brilliant solution. You can hang one or two macrame hangers from them without committing to permanent holes in your walls. These are also renter-friendly and great for those who like to switch things up often.

✨ Best for: Renters, anyone who doesn’t want to drill into walls.

🛠️ DIY level: No drill.

Things to Consider Before Hanging

  • Weight of the Plant & Pot → Heavier pots and plants need stronger fixtures.

  • Surface Material → Plaster walls and ceilings can be tricky; consider anchor plugs or stick with no-drill options if you’re not confident.

  • Lighting Needs → Most plants love light, so think about placing hangers near windows.

  • Safety First → Always check your fixings are strong enough before hanging a pot above your head!

My Favourite Way to Hang Plant Hangers

Honestly? I don’t think I have a favourite!

I love a simple ceiling hook near a bright window — it gives the plant loads of light and that lovely floating feel. But I’m also a big fan of the quirky wall brackets from Sarus; they work so nicely with artwork, adding a bit of 3D texture to an otherwise flat wall.

And then there’s my studio setup — I use a double clothes rail so I can move plants around, make more hangers, and change things up whenever I feel like it. So yes… I suppose my favourite way to hang them changes all the time!
